Overview 2023

NABFEME kicked off the year with our “Bubbles & Bosses” Campaign. It was designed as an after-work networking set that featured female entrepreneurs, businesswomen, managers, community leaders and more. Each session was designed to educate and inform the market in a woman-friendly, diverse, open to all type of atmosphere. It included 3-4 “local bosses” ... powerful women who shared stories and gems from their success journey. We completed sessions in Memphis, Detroit, Shreveport, Chicago and Charlotte.

NABFEME completed a series of Facebook LIVE Sessions that were entitled “The Monthly Mojo” featuring professional thought leaders. The monthly series included “Women’s Self Defense, we spotlighted Phelicia Wright whose career story inspired the Black Moon Girl Disney Character, we dug into entertainment legalities and business deals with Atty Rosetta Upshaw, Actress and Producer Erika Nicole Malone shared the journey and challenges of being a Black female in Hollywood who is acting, directing and producing... we had a great time with Transformation Coach Deanna Dupree and Kraft Foods retired VP, Robert Johnson shared leadership tips. For Black Music Month, we spotlighted Black Female DJs... Chevi Redd, DJ Lexx, Shani Scott, DJ Faze and Milli Mills were among our guests. We also spotlighted music and record label executive TC Tompkins and his new book, “When Radio Was King,” and for Black Music Month, we introduced our Queens of Southern Soul, which led us to the Elephant In The Room series.

The Elephant In The Room initiative was designed to tour 10 cities and focus on community engagement and social responsibility. It aimed to bring together local entrepreneurs, government officials, and influential speakers along with soulful R&B music performers we labeled the “Queens of R&B.” The initiative aimed to initiate discussions and conversations surrounding various social issues and unspoken truths that affect our communities, including Mental Health, Social Injustice, Homelessness, Funding for Black Businesses, Domestic Violence, Guns, Breast Cancer, HIV, and many others. Although there were challenges during the tour, the great audiences, powerful speakers, and excellent performances fueled the initiative, and it gained popularity as people began to understand the concept. As a result, there are four pre-confirmed Elephant In The Room dates in 2024.

In 2023, NABFEME partnered with the Susan G Komen Foundation to address breast cancer in the Black community. The partnership was suggested by a longtime colleague, and although some aspects were positive, there were also some challenges. To move forward, NABFEME agreed to obtain the foundation's approval before including them in any marketing or events since not everything is suitable for everyone. The Elephant In The Room series was a great start for both organizations, and we will handle each scenario on a case-by-case basis. The partnership agreement is valid for one year.

The 9th Annual Women in Entertainment Luncheon was recently held at Dignity Health Sports Park in the American Express Stadium Club in Carver City, CA. Lee, Chairman & CEO Emeritus/BET Networks and Chair of The Leading Women Defined Foundation, received the "Inspiration Award."

Among the list of honorees Ms Dion Peronneau received the NABFEME Profiles In Excellence Award ... an honor she was presented on August 25, 2001 but was unable to attend and receive. 21 years later, Dion was received her “Female Business Owner of the Year” Award at the WIE Luncheon presented by Congresswoman Maxine Waters. It was an incredible honor for both the National Association of Black Female Executives in Music and Entertainment, Inc. (NABFEME Los Angeles) and Women Helping Women in Entertainment to host this event for the 9th year.

Deneen Womack and Gwendolyn Kingsberry are two long time members of NABFEME. Both have entrenched their marketing fingerprints on WBLS in New York, and recently they created their own marketing/branding firm called Brand Elevation Marketing. With a desire to further develop NABFEME in the "Big Apple" while increasing our activities and brand presence ... a meeting in the ladies room became necessary and the partnership ensued! Our first joint venture with Brand Elevation Marketing was the very successful New York Women in Radio virtual session that was presented during Women’s History Month.

As the partnership develops, Deneen & Gwen will keep us abreast of New York opportunities and also bring development potential to the table. Look forward to membership drives, seminars, events and more as we develop.

Shayla Faustin is the CEO of Shayla Faustin Services LLC, a self- Published author, freelancer and life coach... Shayla manages a small business network on Facebook called The CRU. Focused and dedicated in all she does, Shayla has helped hundreds of small businesses, authors and families to achieve their goals via her solution-oriented services. Her love for Health & Wellness was the stimulant that drove her to create Earth Scents, a startup that focuses on spiritual health and wellness. In the Heart of Deception, her first novel, is a touching romance that was published in May of 2021.

We feel having a coach while traveling on your career journey is not only important... it is necessary! Members' Empowerment Circle... Sisterhood is no fun without sisters, that's why we created a program to enlarge our circle! When you join, renew or return... this program allows you to bring a sister-friend along with you! Member Spotlight... Each week we will spotlight a NABFEME member on our website and various social media accounts. The Member's Empowerment Circle is a concept that gives members the opportunity to be a blessing to someone else. Members who renew, join or return to the organization at the Executive Level, get to "pay it forward" by receiving a FREE Executive Level Membership to share with another sister or colleague! I am honored, humbled and pleased that you have chosen to be a member of NABFEME … the National Association of Black Female Executives in Music & Entertainment, Inc.

Today, my outreach to you has a different meaning. Reports show the global number of confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) is rapidly reaching a staggering number of 9 million! And with regards to this state-of-emergency and the evolving public health concerns surrounding COVID-19... ALL NABFEME related events and/or activities have been cancelled. The safety and health of our members as well as those that attend our events and activities are of paramount concern for us!

NABFEME is a vibrant, interactive organization and we share a common desire to learn, educate and collaborate so that we are able to deliver meaningful and powerful results. Our events, meetings and seminars that bring us in direct contact with you are very important to our mission of ensuring the next generation of female leaders have the best opportunity to grow and learn. Therefore, to maintain our commitment of empowerment, until further notice... we will continue via the use of online alternatives. We have activated NABFEME Digital and will use this platform to present seminars and other activities.

At every opportunity, we must do everything we can to stop, contain, control, delay and reduce the impact of COVID-19. Everyone has the capacity to contribute, to protect themselves, to protect others, whether in the home, the community, the workplace, or even in social activities.

Tonya Butler ill be the new assistant chair of the Music Business Management Department at Berklee College of Music beginning August 1. She will be the first woman to have a leadership role in the department. She succeeds John Kellogg, who is retiring after more than a decade in the position. Butler is an accomplished educator, attorney, administrator, and motivational speaker. She comes to Berklee from Minnesota State University, Mankato, where she directed the Music Industry Studies program. She previously served as the coordinator of music business at the University of Memphis and course director of entertainment marketing and media distribution at the Los Angeles Film School.

“I have been in the music business for a long time and trust me, it is no joke”, said Butler. “Luckily, Berklee understands exactly what it takes to succeed and I can hardly wait to add my two cents to the till and my spice to the pot.”

Prior to teaching, Butler spent 14 years as an entertainment attorney working in-house for record and publishing companies and film studios.

In 2005 when the NABFEME Summit was in Chicago I made it a priority to attend because I have always dreamed of working in the entertainment industry. At this conference I met Karen Taylor Bass and her assistant Wendy Robinson. Meeting these two ladies was the beginning of who I am today. After spending the weekend with Karen, she learned that I was a medical doctor and she gave me some advice that changed my world ... she said “from now on you will introduce yourself as Dr. Renee.” From that moment forward every person I met, I introduced myself as Dr. Renee. At the NABFEME Showcase at the Harold Washington Center I saw a talented, young female rapper, Lady Te who is from my hometown of Detroit.

Wendy encouraged me to ask her for her package and contact information. I told Wendy I was just getting started and felt I needed more experience. I was not sure if I wanted to go in the same direction as her with my career in the entertainment industry. Although I wasn’t sure I took the chance and introduced myself to Lady Te and her parents. After having the package for two weeks, I finally opened it to discover she was more than just talented but also professional and passionate about her music career. Immediately I contacted her mother to learn more about Lady Te’s project and her mom was so impressed she was ready to sign the contract right away! I remember when I sent my first press release/email blast Johnnie Walker emailed me and gave me a critique and I couldn’t believe that someone of her caliber took time to reach out to me.

August 2005 Matthews Entertainment Group & Associates was born and from our work with Lady Te more notable artists started calling. Karen Taylor Bass is now my mentor/sisterfriend and she has emailed and called me after every major milestone in my career. Now in 2014 we are managing Steven Russell Harts lead singer of TROOP who is also a Grammy winning songwriter and producer. My company could not have been successful had it not been for the contacts I made at the NABFEME Summit. Those ladies introduced me to a world of people that I would have never known. Most importantly, I would never have been known as Dr. Renee had it not been for my interaction with NABFEME.

Brand WOMEN WHO JAM! experienced a boost and tremendous growth in 2013 with increased outlets airing the radio program, thus increasing the number of opportunities for women making music to be heard. For a list of stations that air our program, visit www.WOMENWHOJAM.com. SESAC, the fastest growing performance rights organization in the US, joined our operations by hosting 7 dedicated Women Who Jam! showcases in their Atlanta showroom! Stage 72 in New York joined us as a showcase partner; and Philadelphia picked up steam by adding a Women Who Jam! showcase in the market every first Tuesday in the month at the Mezzanine Super Club. The next partner to join our efforts to promote women in music was KISS-104 FM in Atlanta. Through a 6-week campaign that featured live performances and social media voting, we delivered the opening acts for the station’s annual Family-Fest concert in the park, headlined by the legendary all girl band, KLYMAXX! Implemented through a partnership with Victory in Christ Christian Church, Women Who Jam for Christ was introduced. This faith-based showcase featuring performances by Gospel and Inspirational artists was extremely successful. It opened the door for the creation of a radio program by the same name featured on the LMB Network.

2013 saw various meetings with the leadership of the organization to plan goals and objectives. Overall we decided to

In 2013 we implemented NABFEME Connect, an “open” monthly conference call as a means of communicating with the membership and those considering membership. We believe that initiative did not deliver the desired results because it was open. NABFEME Connect was delayed with a planned return in 2014, but utilized as a planning tool for the local leadership. Open calls will be presented only at the discretion of the local leadership.

In 2013 NABFEME Headquarters also engaged in the development or re-development of new or established regional networks, We believe this will increase our strength and overall presence in the marketplace. This action included markets like Memphis, St. Louis, Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit and Toronto, Canada.

A Sister's Love

So I am reflecting on life and not sweating the little things. I was talking with my sister on the fear of getting older and life balance.

I said I noticed that we are the backbone to the household. We take care of everyone and the last person is always ourselves.

She retired 3 years ago and had problems breathing. Being persistent with her doctor who kept dismissing it they found that she had lung cancer. She had surgery and a portion of her lung was removed. She thought it was cut out, gone, that's it. Her frustration over being tested, going for follow up appointments finally hit home that you're not clear yet.

It made me think that we all should take better care of ourselves, get all preventive care, and to lean on each other for support. Also be persistent with your doctors for testing.

I wrote a poem for my sister called "C" I Hate You and published in my book "Loving Me" . I read it to her while she was in the hospital and again when she recovered. She smiled at her little sister and a tear ran down her cheek.

While we love to call her Vicki, Victoria Wayne is an experienced Information Technology Specialist, and she brings a wealth of knowledge to NABFEME. Vicki specializes in web design, writing, research, digital imaging, digital photography, programming, and application development. Vicki holds a BA in Media Communications and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Educational Technology from Webster University. She has performed as a promotions and on-air assistant with several Clear Channel Communications radio stations in the St. Louis area, as well as served as the freelance director of photography and St. Louis Liason for Interscope, Gaffen, and Universal Records. Vicki also assists with projects for a media company based in Germany.

Vicki has worked with Lunix, Mac, and Windows environments in higher education, public K-12 education and in businesses. She worked for 4 years at Washington University in the area of library and technology. In addition, our WebMistress Ms Vicki Wayne has worked for 7 years in Special Education and in K-12 education. Her current projects include authoring children's books and developing apps for children.

Every year, the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects
1,000 talented minority students to receive a good-through-graduation
scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. The
program provides scholars with personal & professional development
through leadership programs along with academic support through-
out their college career. Administered by the UNCF, the program was
initially funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation. Since 1999, it has funded the education of more than
16,000 students, awarding them more than $614M to pay for tuition,

Music Industry Stunned as the Death of Chris Lighty Surfaces

The Hip-Hop community remains in shock as the death of Chris Lighty continues to stun the music industry. Lightly died of an apparent gunshot wound on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012 at his home in the Bronx borough of New York, he was 44. The founder of Violator Management, Chris Lighty was found dead in what several news sources are calling an apparent suicide. According to the NY Daily News, cops found Lighty in his Bronx NY apartment around 11:30 a.m.

Chris literally had a hand in working with, crafting, or influencing the sound that is played on radios today. In 2008 he was profiled in Crain’s New York, 40 under 40. In the interview he credited his tough Bronx upbringing for making him hungry to succeed. He turned down a college scholarship in order to stay behind and help his family with bills. During the day, he would work as an electrician and at night he would tote album crates for Kool DJ Red Alert, the staunch business magazine reported.

In the early 80’s Chris worked with Native Tongue affiliates Jungle Brothers where he described himself as everything from the manager to the garbage man, in an allindstron.com documentary. From there he started working at Rush Management having a hand in all projects from Big Daddy Kane to Brand Nubian. He later started Violator, a management company that would also branch into a music label. Lighty worked with such artist as, Mariah Carey, Q-tip, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, Nas and more.

In Crain’s 40 under 40 feature, which lauded the hip hop mogul as a true American success, he said: “When you’re growing up in the Reagan era, you really learn the value of a food stampundefinedand you never want to go back there.”

Hi everyone, my name is Sharon and I'm from the Bronx, NY. I graduated from SUNY Old Westbury in 2003 with a B.A. in Media & Communications. I also completed my Paralegal Studies Certificate at Long Island University Brooklyn Campus in 2011. What I'm trying to do now is apply to graduate school at New York University (NYU) in hopes to complete an M.S. in Sports Business with a concentration in Sports Law followed by an M.A. in Music Business. The best part is, both of these masters programs do not require you to take the GRE. I'm so happy about that because I wanted to avoid taking that exam.

Aside from that, I'm an aspiring singer/songwriter whose genre is R&B/Hip Hop/Urban. This has been my life long dream for so long, you know? In high school and college, there were talent shows happening sometimes and I've participated in many of them. After I graduated from Old Westbury, I was one of the people selected to perform at the New York Music Festival in November 2004. As a result, I was the winner of the R&B category where I won the Best Female R&B Solo award (I sang cover songs since I didn't have original material at the time). It was a big deal because I never won an award before. My entire family was so proud of me. I feel blessed knowing that all of these experiences helped me be confident and comfortable on stage. Last year, I attended the ASCAP NY Sessions event where I reconnected with a music producer I worked with in the past, and we've been in touch ever since. It's nice to come across someone who knows and is familiar with your talent. It helps a lot. I found a few other good studios in NYC as well. Hopefully, I'll be in the studio to work on my music soon.

I'm so excited to be a NABFEME member again. I missed NABFEME so much. So many times, I would bug Johnnie Walker asking her when the website will be up and running again. When she gave me an update on that the other day, I immediately spread the word to my fellow NABFEME members. I truly love this organization because speaking from past experiences, the NABFEME staff and other NABFEME members have shown me so much love, support, and encouragement. That alone means so much to me because it can be hard to pursue your dreams when you're not backed up with a support system. Therefore, I look forward to reconnecting with old NABFEME members and linking up with new NABFEME members. :)

I had a very difficult day and difficult year as a whole. You know, one of those days where it's just one thing after another!! I pressed on thru and I am so glad that I came! NABFEME Creates Business Umbrella for Female Entrepreneurs

“Trolley Night” fans in Memphis got a triple treat this past Friday (April 27) at K’PreSha Boutique on South Main. The National Association of Black Female Executives in Music & Entertainment, Inc. (NABFEME) hosted a champagne filled business networking Soirée at the boutique.. Dubbed Rhythm, Reading & The Runway, the event was overflowing with talent and professional smarts and was designed to attract consumers while creating a marketing vacuum for local businesswomen and their products. Members and supporters of NABFEME were delighted to participate in this fun filled, motivational occasion.

Sprinkled with a variety of entertainment and showmanship, the event drew crowds from Arkansas, Mississippi and all over Memphis. A talented kiddie dance group called “The Edge” quickly stole the hearts of the Main Street shopping crowds and the musical performances by Jina Govan and Tanisha Ward were on-the-spot crowd pleasers! According to NABFEME Founder Ms Johnnie Walker, the gathering was a smashing success. “We recently launched a new program called BEEP, “Black Entertainment Entrepreneur Power, said Walker. The purpose of the program is to connect different businesses and show them the crossover potential of their products and services, while they compliment each other and share customers. Our Rhythm, Reading & The Runway concept brought singers, dancers, authors and models under one roof to accomplish a two goals, build consumer awareness and increase sales. We invited the ladies to the boutique so that they could network, be entertained and shop at the same time!”

Memphis based authors Megan Mottley (Glamour Girl), Gwen Harmon (Love Songs), Shayna Rattler (Higher: 5 Power Principles for Entrepreneurs), Jae Henderson (Someday Too) and Eve Alexander (10 Commandants of Love) presented their books and shared their self-publishing business models with attendees.

In preparation for our SMART Women St. Louis Meet Up, the ladies in The Lou wanted answers to a couple of questions prior to my arrival. They sent questions, I answered. I want to share the Q&A with you!

Q. What can you tell women about working and attaining leadership roles in today's job market?

A. It all boils down to how you think. The way you think determines the choices you make and the choices you make determine how you act and the way you act often determines your outcome. The old saying, your attitude determines your altitude can certainly be applied women regarding working and attaining leadership roles in today's job market.

Q. What advice do you give young women today about being women in the music and entertainment business?

A. Four things. 1) Be innovative, you gotta think out of the box! 2)Be optimistic... sometimes blindly optimistic, believe in yourself and stay positive attitude! 3) Be tenacious... determined, never give up and 4) be opportunistic... you gotta strike while the iron is hot!

Q. What are your thoughts about the industry when you see reality shows like Love & Hip-Hop?

A. First of all these are TV shows and TV shows are created to entertain audiences. For viewers that find these type of shows entertaining its a winner for the network and the producer. Shows like Love & Hip Hop do no create defining moments for me regarding the industry, therefore I don't have any real thoughts about them. On the other hand, I realize people love seeing and connecting with lifestyles that aren't necessarily theirs, so again, entertainment that wins. I applaud the opportunities that these shows have given to Black women behind and in front of the camera.

I have always been a firm believer in the power of networking. You meet people who often morph into friends, colleagues, mentors and even clients! Networking is a core characteristic of NABFEME and it is just one of the ways you can get the most out of your membership.

Here are some things to consider, or some things you can do to help increase your visibility amongst our membership and professional community:

1. Complete your member profile! Upload your logo or your photo! Complete the short bio! Tell us how wonderful you are and what you do! Give other members a reason to connect with you!

2. Attend meetings, educational programs, mixers and networking events! Get out and meet people, learn about new industry trends and find opportunities to work together. Some of the best deals are made away from the office!

3. Join a committee, a task force or team effort! I know everyone is busy with hectic schedules... but the best way to grab some new business is to be a part of something. When you volunteer, you often meet other great women who may need you and your professional services.

4. Sponsor an event, meeting or gathering! Don't run and hide your purse... there are a variety of ways to do this whether its a physical meeting, event or a virtual concept. Your sponsorship can come in the way of support and participation, be creative. And the best part will be seeing your company get the exposure in front of your colleagues and industry peers.

5. Think outside YOUR box! Just because you are an entertainment lawyer doesn't mean every client has to be a musician or athlete. Expand your thinking, look for opportunities to connect in other industries like fashion, publishing, culinary arts, health & fitness, finance, etc.... take a chance on a different kind of opportunity that may give you growth in a "new" market.

I couldn’t help but read the varying Facebook and Twitter posts about the TV One lawsuit against Matthew Knowles and the subsequent mandate to pull all of Music World’s music and artists, etc from the libraries of the Radio One radio stations. I read “Cathy Hughes is dead wrong,” and I read “what a shame, two Black businesses beating each other down” … “she’s penalizing the artists” and yak, yak and more yak!

Having spent a major portion of my life on both sides of the fence … my view maybe different and probably won’t be shared by many, but its “my 2-cents” so I'm gonna jump in, dance with the stars and share my thoughts.

First of all take the “Black” out of it. This is a "green" matter! They are two adult business people who made adult business decisions and they both have to deal with the consequences of those decisions regardless of what they are. Matthew Knowles knew exactly what he was doing when he violated Ms Hughes’ exclusivity contract. He knew what the risks were; however, he chose to follow his instincts or the advice of someone paid very well to give advice, and went for what appeared to be a bigger slice of the media pie. His decision. Cathy Hughes files a lawsuit and subsequently pulls any music affiliated with Mr. Knowles from her radio outlets. She knew exactly what ramifications or competitive risks her radio stations might face by pulling popular songs and artists from her playlists and/or libraries. Her decision.

I read about the lawsuit a while back, however I could have missed it … but I don’t recall reading or hearing anyone say, “shame on Mathew Knowles, he’s dead wrong for violating TV One’s exclusivity contract!” Or maybe for some folks, this is big business and it’s just how the “big boys” roll! Don’t get in the water if you can’t swim with the sharks baby! … Whatever!

And to the poor artists who will suffer from the hideous actions of these two gigantic music and media moguls … wake up! If radio airplay is your only avenue to success… better check and see if McDonald’s is hiring! While radio is still the best avenue for recorded music exposure, in today’s fragmented marketplace, artists and labels that depend solely on radio airplay for success are probably living in a pipe dream anyway.

Regardless of what happens, I don’t see any real winners here. These types of occurrences usually leave more scars than home runs. We’ve lost Black radio (as I know it); Black music divisions are almost passé, so what’s next? A Bravo reality show called Music Mogul Factor! Let’s see what the moguls will do to eliminate each other! And the grand prize is….

Taking A POWER Trip!

Ladies, please join me in taking a power trip! Let's begin by embracing our influential status and never playing it down. Some of us, regardless of what we have achieved are still reluctant to embrace power… let alone let it be known we desire power. Whether its power to change policy or power to make "big bucks," or power to have people listen when we speak… for some power is a dirty word. What is worse, we often don’t support other women in their attempts to gain influence and power. It might be because our culture identifies it as a masculine trait… or at least an unfeminine one. Calling a man “power hungry” often means he is ambitious in a good way. Calling a woman power hungry often means she’s selfish and shows no mercy in her climb to the top. And she almost always gets the "B-word" attached to her.

As a woman of power … I make sure I remind my children, my family and my colleagues that Black Women have always been powerful. Before Xena Warrior Princess, we had Pam Grier and Foxy Brown! Way before the power of Venus and Serena Williams … we had a young girl from the ghetto who served her way to the top of the tennis circuit, Ms. Althea Gibson. Born in

Tennessee, struck with polio at age 4, Wilma Rudolf was known as “The Fastest Woman on Earth” and became the first American woman ever to win triple gold in a single Olympics!!

Black Women Have Always Been Powerful … we've just had to fight harder, fight longer and fight a little better! From the first lady of civil rights, Mama Rosa Parks who was just not giving up her seat that day…. to Shirley Chisolm who became the first Black woman to be elected to the United States Congress to Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, the first Black woman elected to the House of Representatives, to our first self made Black millionaire, Madame CJ Walker!

Black Women Have Always Been Powerful … From Billy Holiday who struggled throughout her career and paid the ultimate price for the ill treatment she received as a woman who just wanted to be taken seriously for her music… to Tina Turner, who turned the tables on an abusive husband and came back to the top of the music charts, a powerful, timeless, R&B goddess!! Black Women Have Always Been Powerful … For many years it was a struggle getting Black music on the radio and an even bigger struggle getting black announcers on the air. Today, is it any wonder, a young woman went from being an overnight announcer, where she and her son sometimes slept on the floor, to not only owning that station, but to become the chairperson of the largest African American owned radio group in the country… Radio One-Superwoman, Cathy Hughes!

Yes, Black Women Have Always Been Powerful! Remember, obstacles are always a part of the picture. If you find a path with no obstacles… then it probably doesn’t lead anywhere. Don’t be afraid to think big. Set your goals high. Imagine the results you want, then go for it! Never wait on the “big opportunity” … that once in a lifetime chance. Prepare, create your own opportunities! And, the next time you see a woman taking control, instead of saying … “Who does she think she is?? Try saying, MORE POWER TO HER!
